Grand Opening of my NEW & IMPROVED website!! I have been with a different company for the past 4 years.....I had a very nice site, support was great, easy to navigate, etc....took a long time to learn html, but I finally got it after 4 years, but there was one problem: I couldn't arrange a layout that would allow me to combine all the different little facets of my work....and, let's face it, even when you are proficient at html, it is still time consuming. It took me a century to load in new products, so I rarely did. All this great new stuff just sitting around.

I recently stumbled across a fun blog with adorable products and wanted to know more. After a little digging I found that the owner had recently opened new website at Goodsie. One peak and I had a solution for my problem. Goodsie would allow me to easily integate all my products in one shop....one-stop-shopping for my customers!

I created the graphics (thankyou Lettering Delights ) back in December with this lovely penguin theme, hoping that I would get things rolling sooner, but since the Groundhog pedicted 6 more weeks of winter today, I guess I can leave them up a bit longer!

Samples for the Hugs&Kisses baskets at Sampler Village have been shipped. I continued with the zebra theme (just about everything I have made this week has had a little zebra-print in it) and had a blast making these fun cupcakes...maybe a tutorial coming on how to create your own.

They almost look good enough to eat!

25 cupcake charms....each one has a small sterling hook attached (behind the black "candy" heart) for hanging...these would be adorable as pendants or backpack pulls!

All ready to be packaged, boxed, and shipped off to Traci at Sampler Village.

1800 fans...woo hoo!!

Woke up this morning to find my fan counter on facebook has passed the 1800 mark! Honestly its just a number, and while it is fun to see it growing, probably 30-40 interact on my page on a regular basis. Never-the-less it is a great platform to get your work seen. So in celebration of the big 1800 I will be giving away a little cupcake or incecream cone charm with any orders placed in my shops, on facebook, or directly through email today! The cupcake/icecream cone can be made as a bead, charm or bow center with the finish of the customer's choosing.

Just added a couple of fun zebra-inspired items to my shops. They were a spin-off from a custom request for a little zebra cupcake pendant....I adore zebra pattern and, of course, couldn't stop at one cupcake!

The first in a new monthly series!

I have had many requests for tutorials in the past year and have finally gotten around to putting some together. Polymer clay is a wonderful substance that is fun and easy to work with for both kids and adults. It comes in a huge variety of colors in several brands. It can be mixed just like paint to make any color in the rainbow! It is affordable, ranging from about 1.29 for craft store brands to 1.99 for Sculpey3 to 2.79 for higher end brands such as Fimo and Premo.It comes in 2 oz blocks or larger 8 oz blocks for big projects. I primarily use Fimo with some Sculpey. It frequently goes on sale at the big craft chains such as Michael's and can also be orderd online.

The best thing about polymer clay is you can grab a package and start playing! There is not much prep other than a clean work surface and a few basic tools

I cover my work space with inexpensive sheets of copy paper that I can toss at the end of each project. Freezer paper or waxed paper works well also. There are many "clay kits" available with several tools to create patterns and textures, but a few basics will be suitable for this project. A utility knife, such as an Exacto, and a stylus are perfect for cutting the clay and adding details. The best tool is your hands!! It is important to keep them clean and free of layers of clay that tend to build up when mixing colors or shaping. Baby wipes work well for removing clay or a mid cleaner and papertowels to scrub the clay off. Hand soap usually does not penetrate the clay build-up.

To cure your finished clay piece you will need a cookie sheet or shallow baking tray lined with parchment paper and an oven, toaser over works very well!

A few other "deluxe" tools that are nice to have are an acrylic roller (about 5$), a pasta machine (about 20$ found at craft store in the clay dept.), and various mini-cookie cutters and tiny clay cutters. I use a brand caller Kemper cutters. They come in a variety of shapes and size and make creating cut-out shapes a breeze.

SUPPLIES

For this project you will need the following:

polymer clay (2 oz blocks)

tan

brown

orange

white

green

aqua

red or magenta

black micro-beads

small number stamps

star mini cookie cutter

colored rhinestones -bling!

silver eyepin, or silver wire

exacto knife and stylus

ruler

super glue

paper and scissors (to make a star stencil if not using cookie cutter)

glaze and paint brush

glitter

ribbon (to hang your finished ornament)

Nice to have but not required:

pasta machine or acrylic roller

STEP 1

1. make head and body from white clay, shaped slightly "square" like marshmellows

2. roll 2 arms

3. pinch off a tiny piece of orange and shpe the carrot nose

4. roll (setting 6 on pasta machine) or flatten to 1/8 inch a piece of tan and cut out the graham cracker

5. roll (setting 5 on pasta machine) or flatten to 1/8 inch a piece of brown and cut out the chocolate bar

STEP 2

1. using stylus, make eyes, nose (slightly larger than eye sockets) and mouth

2. add carrot nose and micro-bead eyes and mouth, push gently into holes made by stylus

STEP 3

1. assemble the base and body

2. press all parts together firmly

STEP 4

1. roll (setting 4 on pasta machine) or flatten to 1/8 inch a piece of magenta or red clay and press cookie cutter to make star. If not using the cookie cutter, draw a star shape, about 3/4 inch and cut out. Place star stencil on flattened clay and trace with exacto knife.

2. press 2012 into star with number stamps, being careful to align the numbers. Add detail with stylus

3. shape the hat from aqua clay

4. roll a green snake , about 2 inches for hat brim and shape a small green pom-pom

STEP 5

1. assemble the hat, pressing all parts firmly together and place on snowman's head

2. add star to body, tipping a bit so the point is not in his face. press firmly between his arms

STEP 6

1. insert eyepin (or shape your wire into a little hook with 1 inch tail) carfully through top of hat into snowman, making sure it goes down straight and not angled or it will poke out!

2. place on lined baking sheet and bake at 230 degrees for about 20 minutes. Remove and let cool about 10 min. or unlit cool to the touch.

STEP 7

now comes the fun!!

1. add some bling here and there with super glue and let dry.

2. give one coat of glaze to back and let dry according to directions on glaze. when dry, flip over and glaze the front.

3. before the glaze on front dries, sprinkle with glitter, using care not to get to much on his face! let dry

4. string colored ribbon through hook

5. If your tree is still up, find a nice branch to hang him, or hang on a mini tree to ring in the New Year.

You could also stand him on a little shelf or on a sunny window sill.

A look back...

On New Year's day 2011, I challenged myself to create a new design every day for the entire year. I came up with roughly 350 days worth of designs, taking a few days off during an unexpected and extended power-outage in October, and the final 12 days before Christmas.

I started January off creating whatever I felt like each day. This method quickly became kaotic, so I chose a fun theme for each month instead. I designed traditonal beads and charms for jewelry, centers for hair bows, cupcake toppers, and ornaments. It was a fun project, though time-intensive as all the new designs had to be photographed daily and then edited into a graphic frame and uploaded to my facebook page.

Eventually my favorite designs will be listed in my etsy shop and on my website. This picture below samples one design for each month. Scroll down (there are many other designs included as well, but as you scroll you will begin to "Bead of the Day" designs, starting with December.

A little housecleaning!

A HUGE exhale!! November was, by far, the busiest month Jelly Beads has seen, and after a wonderfully relaxing Christmas, the dust has settled a bit and it is time to do some long-overdue organizing! I dragged my entire inventory of beads, buttons, and bow centers out onto the kitchen table to take stock of what I have, what I need to move out, what I need to make more of, and in general where I want to go with my work. Definitely more than I can accomplish in one afternoon!

Of course I had a little helper!

Jelly Beads is looking forward to a (hopefully) somewhat relaxed week...my shops are closed to orders until Jan 1. I will be doing some revamping of my inventory and adding lot's of new designs. 2010 was a busy year in which I didn't have time to catch my breath...I was blessed with a steady stream of orders. I am hoping to continue to grow as an artist and designer, and really would love to move in the direction of illustration (slowly!) as time permits. Ultimately, as long as I am creating in some form on a daily basis, I am happy!!!

This birthday topper was custom ordered from my Jelly Cakes shop on Etsy. It was an adaptation of a stock monkey topper and with a few color and design changes it was made to match this cute bday invitation. As you can see, the birthday girl's name is Jiya and she is turning one. I incorporated these elements into the topper.

Rudolph And Friends

I have been wanting to do this set for a while now, but this time of year is so crazy with orders that I never seem to have time. I cleverly worked it in as Bead of the Day!! Each day for the last couple of weeks a Rudolph character was spotlighted in my Bead of the Day series. I loved making these little guys...the show is so timeless and classic, and will always be one of my absolute seasonal favorites.!
I created the characters to be used as traditional beads or charms, although they are on the large side (1 1/2 - 2 inches). Any smaller, and I would not have been able to capture the essence of each character. They would make wonderful ornaments as well. I can see them all strung with bright red ribbon and placed on a table-top tree.

My favorites are the little white owl and the mug of hot chocolate with swirly whipped cream...yummy!!!

These (with the exception of the Hello Kittys and turkeys) have been custom ordered for hair bows. The Hello Kittys& turkeys are a standard order from my website...so cute, I just had to include them in the photo!

I really enjoy custom work. My customers typically send a picture of an outfit or ribbon that they would like to have matched in clay. It is always a challenge to get the clay "just right"!

I had fun creating these Lala-inspired party favor charms. They are so colorful and cheery!

Can you find your favorite?

I really love the concept behind the little ragdolls......"sew magical, sew fun". Each doll character has her own little story of how she came to be and is magically brought to life by the fabric that she has been made from. My girls have collected a few and love them and I love how they bring me back to my childhood. I would spend hours creating and sewing my own little ragdolls from bits of cloth from Nana's fabric stash.

This custom order included 2 different styles of each character and her little pet. I love their silly names!

YUP!! 2 days before Halloween we woke up to this!!

Mother nature definitely had some tricks in store for us...downed trees and power lines, school and business closings....but in the early morning hours, the peace and tranquility was quite a treat for the senses.

15 or so inches of heavy, wet October snow!

Just a couple hours into the storm...

Here is my Hubby, a Lineman for our utility, heading out for the first of almost a week's worth of 18hr night shifts...and he is still smiling : )

The kids thought it was great!

And Harry, the boxer, didn't seem to mind either

Rambo, who is only 8 inches tall, was not quite so sure....

This porcupine was not amused....his calendar says October not January!!

Despite the snow, we did manage to have some Halloween fun! We lost power for 4 days, but thanks to a generator (purchased about a month ago for Hurricane Irene), we had the basics and were cozy & warm.

The girls even dressed in their costumes (trick'o treating was postponed to the next weekend)...Cleopatra and I Dream of Jenie!

Even the doxies had a little Halloweenie fun!

The winter wonderland outside of my studio window inspired all of the winter/holiday orders that I was working on this weekend!

Of course the snow will melt (well, we hope it does or this winter will definetly be 6 months long!) and we will be back to thoughts of Autumn and Thanksgiving. In the studio, my clay table is covered in bits and pieces of white, red & green clay, my doxies are curled up enjoying the warmth from the sunny window, and the kids are back in school (thank goodness)...all is well!!

This month was a crazy mix of Christmas beads, custom orders, shop orders, vacation, and Iron Man training...and of course all the daily chores of running a household made up of 5 kids and 6 dogs!!
I completed my 2nd IronMan triathlon in beautiful Lake Placid, NY last weekend...was an incredible day and my family was there to support me on the 12+ hr journey. Here we all are at the finish.

A week and a half has slipped by....here is a recap of the Bead Of The Day!

It's no surprise what holiday is right around the corner (yes, I know, St. Patty's...but think eggs and candy not little green men!) Lot's of Easter designs in this bunch, with many more to come throughout the rest of the month. I have been having a great time matching some of the great ribbon that is available.

Busy week wrap-up

WOW...where did the week go?
Worked on orders and sent out a batch of samples to one of my favorite places, Sampler Village. Once a monthTraci puts together the most fabulous Samplicious sample boxes that are filled with handmade goodies. Each month is a different theme, March being the Easter Eggstravaganza box.
Here are some photos of my contribution. I focused alot on the packaging and presentation. I wish that I had the time to make my regular orders look this pretty...most days it is a mad dash to get to the PO before 4:30...this is something I would like to work on in the future...presentation is everything!

Jelly Beads is making the transition from the reds and pinks of February to the green shamrocks and rainbow colors of March. I am very excited about this month as there is so much going on at my work table!
I will be sending off some samples to The Sampler Village in a couple of days for their wonderful Sampilicious Treat Boxes. I will post pictures soon.
I have many more cake toppers that are being listed over at Jelly Cakes....birthday, baby shower, and wedding to name a few.
And, hopefully by the end of the month, I will be launching a new line, called Jelly Scraps, which will include handmade polymer clay buttons and embellishments for sewing and scrapbooking...stay tuned for a sneak peak coming soon!
Oh yes, and lot's of custom and shop orders for my wonderful customers mixed with some Illustration Friday pieces...phew, need more hours in the day!!!

I know winter is not over yet here in New England, but we all are looking forward to the warmer and brighter days of March. Here is a picture of my little girls just a couple of weeks ago...that is alot of snow! We have a ways to go before we see green!

Berry Sweet cake topper

This one brings me right back to my childhood...I can even remember just how sweet she smelled!

For this set I choose to make the early 2000's version of Strawberry Shortcake. She could be made in several different styles.

Vintage Strawberry Shortcake 1979ish

1990's...frilly with BIG hair!

the 2010 edition...still sweet, but a little more sophisticated

The set that I made for my Jelly Cakes Etsy shop includes 6 little Strawberry Shortcake hats. These can be used as cupcake toppers and double as party favors. They have a little sterling silver hook for hanging. They would be so sweet hung as a pendant from a chain or ribbon...a really nice keepsake for party guests!

Do you have a favorite Strawberry Shortcake style/character? I know there are alot of SS fans out there. She has consistently been the most popular design in my bead shop since I introduced her about a year ago. I am hoping she will be just as popular as a cake topper!

Everyone Loves Birthday Cake....

.....And I love making the toppers! These along with many other sets will be available at Jelly Cakes on Etsy. I have been working on them here and there in between bead orders.. nice change to work on a larger scale, and so much fun to design these chartacters. I opened this shop about 9 months ago, but haven't spent much time on it. I have had quite a few custom orders which is very promising. Another goal for this year is to fill it up with a great assortment of cupcake/cake toppers and party favor packages. Here is one that I photographed yesterday.

This cutie measures 6 inches from the base to the top of the number candle on top of the cupcake. I love this color combo. I think it would be really cute for a little boy if it were done in red, white, & blue. This topper can be made with any number (or letter!).

There are lots of tips and tutorials, and even if you are like me and only have time to throw together cookies from a box, you will enjoy this site. I could go on and on about how great this blog is, but just go and see it for your self!

I have been "hanging out" here alot in my spare time....spare time amounts to the minutes when I am mixing clay colors and my eyes and mind need to keep busy! Or when I just need a good 'ol dose of inspiration, or when I want to see some yummy eye candy. It is super easy to sign up for your free account. You can upgrade later to a Pro account for 25$ a year if you want a few more options...totally worth it, but the free account is great too!!
I especially love the groups feature. Put in a search for "handmade" for example, and you will be rewarded with dozens of groups showcasing handmade goodies from all over the world. You can join or just browse. They are a wonderful way to meet other artists/crafters and participate in discussions, share links, and gather info.

I am currently working on a large custom order for a bridal shop, and thought it would be fun to share some pictures of the process. The order consists of 325 little Minnie & Mickey mouse bride and groom heads. Definitely a challenge to my patience!! Each piece consists of a head plus to ears....wow, that is alot of little black balls to roll, and fortunately, I have had some help for this part (thanks Hubby!). Once the head is complete, it will be embellished with a bow tie, hair bow, headpiece veil, or top hat....lots and lots of cutting, rolling, and shaping here.

They have taken over my kichen table!The pieces in the left front corner will be flattened into head shapes. The smaller round shapes behind them will become ears. Back right corner shows some small white heart shapes that will be bows. Some finished pieces on the plates.

One style of Minnie brides...only about 50 on this plate, 50 more to make of this style.

Well, not really if you live in the North Eastern part of the country, or the Midwest...we are getting hammered with yet another snowstorm....but there are some parts of the county that must be enjoying some sunshine and warm temps. Now that my blog has had its facelift, I can get back to regular posting!!

My blog is just about finished, except for some tweeking here and there...definitely a labor of love to change it over, but I am pleased with the results. I LOVE the red & aqua color theme. A new FLAVOR of Jelly Beads !

I have had a few primitive style beads and buttons in my Saltbox Seasons shop on Etsy for a while, but I have found that they don't get much exposure there as the focus of that shop is handpainted home decor. So, the brilliant idea came to me during one of my long runs (this is when most of my brilliant ideas come to me, btw!) to move them over to Jelly Beads on Etsy. They have a section all their own, but fit in well with my other designs. I purchased some cute border stamps from one of my favorite graphic designers, The Fairy Pixel, to spice up my pictures and have been in the process of listing some pretty new spring designs as well as the ones that were in the Saltbox Seasons shop. I just adore the Prim style and have really enjoyed creating these little prim pieces. They will attract a different audience than my typical customers who shop with me for their cutesy and colorful hair bow centers and childrens jewelry. The Primitive Collection includes designs that are perfect for scrapbooking, sewing and quilting, and craft projects. All the designs can be made as buttons, beads, or flatbacks.
